Dr. Joseph Wakshlag, DVM, Ph.D, DACV, DACVSMR

Associate Professor of Clinical Nutrition and Sports Medicine/Rehabilitation, Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine

Feeding athletes and geriatric dogs is becoming increasingly complex.  There are many considerations for every patient, depending on the expected quality of life or the tasks to be performed.  The first lecture in this series will focus on feeding the geriartric rehabilitation patient with mobility issues, and possibly other issues such as cognition and lean mass wasting.  Proper feeding can lead to improved quality of life.

The second lecture will focus on feeding for osteoarthritis, including the plethora of supplements available.  Evidence-based medicine highlights 4 or 5 different nutraceuticals and/or therapeutic foods that should be considered, particularly in the NSAID intolerant patient.

Lecture 3 provides guidelines for appropriate feeding of canine athletes, including which supplements may be worthwhile and which others may not be.
