This lecture will present findings in the most common types of animal cruelty encountered in veterinary practice – blunt force trauma and neglect. Discussion will include indicators of abuse vs. accidental causes. Sexual abuse of animals will also be addressed as the most commonly missed type of abuse seen in practice. Recommendations and considerations for recognizing, handling and reporting suspected abuse in private practice will be covered, including examination considerations and development of a Standard Operating Procedure.
