This lecture will review the latest in diagnosis and management of hyperthyroidism in cats. Use of serum T4, free T4 and TSH measurements will be covered, as well as the value of thyroid scintigraphy for staging of the disease and diagnosis of thyroid carcinoma. Potential complications of hyperthyroidism, notably masked kidney disease and/or iatrogenic hypothyroidism that can develop after treatment, will be discussed. The pros and cons of all treatment options will be given, with emphasis on how to select the “best” treatment for individual cats.
