“Canine Aggression: Triggers, Myths, and Management”

Lecture will count for 2 CE hours for NYS (pending approval by NYSVMS)

Any dog, of any breed or background, is capable of biting, including family pets who are loved and pampered. Although we often hear about the statistics of reported bites, there is still a great deal of misunderstanding about its causes and safe management. Unfortunately, there is a disconnect between the public’s understanding about dog behavior, and what dogs actually do. Understanding the behavioral basis of bites, as well as the rational use of medication and force-free training, are important steps towards management of this common problem.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

1. Understand behavioral risk factors for biting family members

2. Understand behavioral risk factors for biting unfamiliar people

3. Recognize the lack of understanding by the general public of safety practices

4. A review and update of psychopharmacologic treatment of aggression

5. Ethical and science-based concepts of force-free training and management
