This lecture will cover findings in the most common types of animal cruelty encountered in veterinary practice – blunt force trauma and neglect. Discussion will include indicators of abuse vs. accidental causes. Sexual abuse of animals will also be covered as the most commonly missed type of abuse seen in practice. The recognition of hoarders and how to handle will also be discussed. The recognition of suspected abuse and the NY laws will be discussed. Recommendations and considerations for handling and reporting suspected cruelty in private practice will be presented including examination considerations and developing a Standard Operating Procedure. Case examples will be presented throughout.
