Hereditary diseases: recent advances and clinical implications

 

A world leader in the fields of hereditary diseases and hematology, Dr. Giger is a faculty member at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, the Medical School University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Zürich in Switzerland.  He chairs the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) Hereditary Disease Committee, is the director of the Metabolic Genetics and DNA Genetic Disease Testing (PennGen) Laboratories, and has been widely recognized for his research by the NIH, the WSAVA, the BSAVA, and the AVMA.

 

Learning objectives for this session will include:

1.     Current knowledge of breeds – a critical parameter for likely predispositions.

2.     Simple molecular genetic to understand any papers and studies.

3.     Breadth of hereditary diseases and genetic predispositions in companion animals.

4.     Clinical diagnostic tests including routine lab tests, imaging and specific DNA tests.

5.     Management options for hereditary diseases.

6.     Preventative measures and recommendations for breeding.
