A Step-Wise Approach to Arterial Blood Gas Analysis

Presented by Gretchen Lee Schoeffler, DVM, DAVECC

Evaluation of an arterial blood gas (ABG) result can help in the assessment of a patient’s gas exchange, ventilatory control and acid–base balance. To accurately interpret ABG samples, veterinarians must understand all the components that are measured and how they contribute to maintaining the patient’s normal physiological function. In addition to pH and acid base status, arterial blood gases provide data about the adequacy of a patient’s oxygenation and ventilation. When combined with a patient’s clinical features, blood gas analysis can facilitate diagnosis and management of a variety veterinary patients. A portion of the presentation will be used to evaluate patient case studies to give the attendees the opportunity to analyze ABGs within the context of patient scenarios.
