Registration has opened for the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Veterinary Leadership Conference (VLC), which will take place January 10-13, 2019, at the Chicago Marriott on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile.

The VLC is a unique mix of CE sessions, networking and AVMA governance meetings that provide attendees the chance to sharpen their leadership skills while connecting with a diverse network of colleagues from across the veterinary profession. It is open to any veterinary professional interested in learning about leadership, team building and how the AVMA works.

The VLC is the perfect place for veterinarians to explore and cultivate leadership skills with a diverse group of colleagues. Attendees include AVMA leaders (including officers and members of the AVMA board of directors and house of delegates); staff and volunteers from state veterinary associations; early-career veterinarians seeking deeper involvement with veterinary organizations; veterinary student leaders; and others interested in veterinary advocacy and leadership. Sessions cover a wide range of topics, and up to 8 hours of high-quality continuing education (CE) credit is available for attending selected sessions.

New this year
For the first time, the AVMA will hold its Public Policy Symposium in conjunction with the VLC. The symposium, which will take place on Thursday, January 10, is a daylong event intended to help those with an interest in advocacy and public policy learn how to enhance and improve their interactions with elected officials and regulatory agencies.

Attendees of the symposium will hear from experts and share information with colleagues about what is needed to be effective advocates, how peers are addressing similar legislative and regulatory challenges, and what issues related to the veterinary profession are emerging at the local, state and national levels.

Other new features at this year's VLC include:

  • New and interactive CE formats
  • Expanded networking opportunities
  • Targeted tracks for attendees at different leadership stages

Scholarships available
The AVMA offers scholarships to help rising leaders and veterinarians from traditionally underrepresented groups develop their leadership potential at the VLC. Scholarships of $1,000 are available to AVMA members who fall into one of the following categories:

  • Rising Leaders – Attendees with a desire to serve as a volunteer leader and with little or no prior leadership experience
  • Underrepresented in Veterinary Leadership – Veterinarians from a demographic, geographic or socioeconomic group or practice type that is underrepresented in U.S. veterinary leadership
  • Diversity and Inclusion – Awards are available for AVMA members who have demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion in veterinary medicine. Those who have participated in any of the following are encouraged to apply:
    • Initiatives that foster acceptance and inclusivity for people of all sexual orientations, gender identities and gender presentations within the veterinary medical profession
    • Efforts to eliminate discrimination against LGBTQ+ people in the veterinary profession
    • Programs that connect the LGBTQ+ community to the broader veterinary medical community

Scholarships are awarded in the form of a $1,000 stipend to help with the cost of registration, travel and meals while attending VLC. Scholarship applications are due November 16, 2018. Visit the VLC website to learn more and to apply.
