Veterinary Hospice Care: What Is It and Why Do We Need It?

End of Life Ethics for Veterinarians: Aid in Dying and Beyond

 2 CE credit hours

It’s important for veterinary professionals to oversee hospice and palliative care for animal patients, and to support animal owners during this difficult time.  The first hour of this CE session will introduce the veterinary hospice concept and explain why it is necessary.  Attendees will learn how to respond to clients who are asking hard questions about the end of their pet’s life, and how to find support for themselves as they face tough situations along with their clients.

The second hour of this session will explore the rich ethical terrain that veterinary team members must navigate.  Foundational biomedical ethical principles will be introduced in terms of their importance to the veterinary team.  Dr. Goldberg will provide a framework for discussing end-of-life ethics within the veterinary profession, with a focus on client support and the veterinary team’s role in managing animal-related grief and bereavement.
